Free Nguyen Vu Binh: A Blogger's Brave Stand Against the System

Updated: Oct 23, 2024

In a twist that feels straight out of a thriller, Vietnamese blogger Nguyen Vu Binh was arrested on February 29, 2024, for simply speaking his mind. At 55, this veteran of human rights activism has faced the wrath of the government for over two decades, and his latest charge? “Conducting propaganda against the state.” Sounds serious, right? But all he did was criticize the Communist Party.

Binh’s journey began as a journalist for the official Communist Party newspaper, but after realizing he wanted more freedom to express his views, he stepped into the world of independent blogging. Since then, he’s been a thorn in the government’s side, advocating for democracy, fighting corruption, and even calling for land rights—all while dodging the heavy hand of the law.

His arrest is just one piece of a larger puzzle. Under the current leadership of General Secretary To Lam, over 269 people have been detained simply for speaking up. In recent months, at least seven activists have been sentenced to prison for voicing their opinions. Talk about a serious party pooper!

Binh isn’t new to this game. He’s faced down the authorities before, serving seven years for “espionage” after speaking out in front of the U.S. Congress. But instead of backing down, he kept writing, sharing his thoughts on everything from police brutality to the Vietnam-China relationship. His recent blog post, just a week before his arrest, was a rallying cry for activists to support one another during tough times.

It’s a little absurd that a government can’t handle a lone voice of dissent. We have to ask: When will they learn to handle a bit of criticism? And why aren’t other countries stepping up to call out this injustice?

So, what can we do?

It’s time to stand up for Nguyen Vu Binh! Let’s demand his release and make some noise about the importance of free speech. Every voice matters, and we can help ensure Binh’s voice is heard loud and clear. Together, we can shine a light on this darkness and advocate for a brighter future where everyone can speak freely.

If you were to pick, which one would you rather have if you couldn't have the other?
